Summary
First published in French as a serial in 1909， "The Phantom of the Opera" is a riveting story that revolves around the young， Swedish Christine Daaé。 Her father， a famous musician， dies， and she is raised in the Paris Opera House with his dying promise of a protective angel of music to guide her。 After a time at the opera house， she begins hearing a voice， who eventually teaches her how to sing beautifully。 All goes well until Christine's childhood friend Raoul comes to visit his parents， who are patrons of the opera， and he sees Christine when she begins successfully singing on the stage。 The voice， who is the deformed， murderous 'ghost' of the opera house named Erik， however， grows violent in his terrible jealousy， until Christine suddenly disappears。 The phantom is in love， but it can only spell disaster。 Leroux's work， with characters ranging from the spoiled prima donna Carlotta to the mysterious Persian from Erik's past， has been immortalized by memorable adaptations。 Despite this， it remains a remarkable piece of Gothic horror literature in and of itself， deeper and darker than any version that follows。

I think I might have been a bit unlucky with my copy of the book and it’s translation， because I found the plot to be all over the place！ The tone was all wrong， which really detracted from my perception of the characters， and I found it extremely difficult to engage with the book。 It just felt a bit flat。 The final 40-ish pages were actually quite good， and the entire writing style and tone seemed to shift - which I thought was a bit odd。 However， it did help the book gain an extra star from me I think I might have been a bit unlucky with my copy of the book and it’s translation， because I found the plot to be all over the place！ The tone was all wrong， which really detracted from my perception of the characters， and I found it extremely difficult to engage with the book。 It just felt a bit flat。 The final 40-ish pages were actually quite good， and the entire writing style and tone seemed to shift - which I thought was a bit odd。 However， it did help the book gain an extra star from me， as I felt like the last few chapters were cohesive and had reason， and were also quite haunting。 One thing I will say is that it was very difficult， personally， to build an emotional relationship with any of the characters - but I think if you were able to then the ending definitely had the ability to be heartbreakingly beautiful。 I just didn’t quite get that。 I almost DNFed the book half way through reading; I’m glad that I didn’t as I’ve always wanted to know how it ends， but I can’t say I’ll be picking it up again any time soon。 。。。more

It's hard for me to read this without the music of Andrew Lloyd Webber filling my ears。 As it says in the Foreword， this has become hugely well-known through the musical and movie; less so through the book。I really did enjoy the book though but it was hard not to be influenced by the musical。 Erik， the Opera Ghost， was given much more background and was indeed far more dark。 I enjoyed reading about the dark background of the Opera Ghost and the games played of the ghost in the Opera。 He was a fa It's hard for me to read this without the music of Andrew Lloyd Webber filling my ears。 As it says in the Foreword， this has become hugely well-known through the musical and movie; less so through the book。I really did enjoy the book though but it was hard not to be influenced by the musical。 Erik， the Opera Ghost， was given much more background and was indeed far more dark。 I enjoyed reading about the dark background of the Opera Ghost and the games played of the ghost in the Opera。 He was a far more complex （and bad） character in the book， rather than in the musical which presents him more sympathetically。 。。。more

The Phantom of the Opera is a story full of mystery， which keeps you hooked until the end。 It is the story of a ghost of an opera theater， an aspiring new actress， and a love-sick vicomte。 Interesting and creative， this book is worth reading。 I watched （and adored） the musical The Phantom of the Opera before reading this， and while the musical doesn't stray too far from the book， I have enjoyed getting more details into the ghost's story， and the story of the Opera House。 One thing that I found The Phantom of the Opera is a story full of mystery， which keeps you hooked until the end。 It is the story of a ghost of an opera theater， an aspiring new actress， and a love-sick vicomte。 Interesting and creative， this book is worth reading。 I watched （and adored） the musical The Phantom of the Opera before reading this， and while the musical doesn't stray too far from the book， I have enjoyed getting more details into the ghost's story， and the story of the Opera House。 One thing that I found interesting while reading this book is that the author acts as if he is a historian uncovering a long-concealed story， and is searching for proof that our ghost did， in fact， exist。 Probably my favorite thing about this book is the phantom's character。 He is sometimes terrifying and seems altogether evil， and at other times we get to pity him， and even admire his genius; it is up to the reader to decide whether he should be hated or pitied。 I would say that the main thing that I was a touch disappointed about was the character of Roul， the vicomte。 His main characteristic seemed to be being head over heels in love with Christine。 Other than that， I enjoyed the book very much， and I would recommend it， though not for very young audiences。 。。。more

un final en el que la chica no rompe el hechizo al enamorarse del “monstruo”， sino que este muere después de un último acto de redención， de modo que la damisela pueda casarse con el niño bonito， Raoul， Que historia tan triste y tan bonita。 El fantasma， Erik， es un personaje gris muy interesante， el cual fue víctima de la intolerancia， los prejuicios y la superficialidad de la sociedad desde que nació。 El “fantasma de la ópera” es una especie de “la bella y la bestia”， pero con final agridulce; un final en el que la chica no rompe el hechizo al enamorarse del “monstruo”， sino que este muere después de un último acto de redención， de modo que la damisela pueda casarse con el niño bonito， Raoul， el arquetipo del héroe （joven， guapo， rico y tan perfecto que aburre）， plenamente aceptado por la sociedad。 Aunque， como explicaré más adelante， el vizconde de Chagny tiene cosas que no me han gustado nada， aunque supongo que en 1910 no eran reprochables。En resumen， “El fantasma de la ópera” es el testimonio de cómo la sociedad puede condenar a la más absoluta soledad a los marginados， los diferentes， los parias， que al anhelar la comprensión， el amor， el respeto y la aceptación de los demás， y no conseguirlo， pueden terminar cayendo en la desesperanza y la depresión， en una espiral de autodestrucción y en la pérdida total de la compasión。 ¿Para qué ser compasivos con los demás， si nadie lo ha sido antes con ellos？Gaston Leroux consigue transmitir perfectamente el ambiente de misterio， secretos， superstición e intrigas del teatro de la ópera de París por el que pululan todos estos personajes， de los que destacan Erik y Christine， cuya trágica historia de amor y desamor es el principal atractivo de esta novela。Christine Daaé es la protagonista， una joven cantante de ópera huérfana， que un día empieza a recibir lecciones de canto de un misterioso Ángel de la música， del que solo escucha su prodigiosa voz。 Aunque puede aparentar ser frágil， delicada e ingenua （no olvidemos que este libro se publicó en 1910， y es lo que se esperaba de una mujer）， en el fondo， Christine es la más valiente y fuerte de todos。 Tras su apariencia de niñita que se deja embaucar hay una persona fuerte que ha salido adelante prácticamente sola desde que murió su padre （y a pesar de llevar a cuestas una evidente depresión）， y sólo piensa en proteger a los que ama de las amenazas del fantasma。 Su situación no es nada fácil， pues cuando aparezca Raoul se verá dividida entre el amor sencillo， bonito e inocente que despierta en ella su amigo de infancia， y la fascinación que le provoca el Ángel de la música， que no es otro que Erik， llamado por todos el fantasma de la ópera。 El autor nos deja en la duda de si Christine llegó a sentir realmente algo más que la mera curiosidad， fascinación y terror por el hombre que se escondía tras la máscara。«—Tiene miedo… pero， ¿me ama？ Si Erik no fuera como es， ¿me amaría， Christine？—¡Desventurado！ ¿Por qué tentar al destino？ ¿Para qué preguntarme cosas que he ocultado en el fondo de mi conciencia como si fueran un pecado？»。En mi opinión， Christine sí llegó a enamorarse en cierta forma de Erik， aunque nunca se atrevió a reconocérselo a sí misma。 Para ella fue mucho más fácil aferrarse al amor que sentía por Raoul， que era la opción más lógica， la más fácil， la que no le costaría ser también rechazada por la sociedad。 Pero， si Erik hubiese tenido otro rostro y， por tanto， otra vida， Raoul no hubiese tenido ninguna oportunidad con Christine， pues Erik comparte con ella la pasión por la música （algo que el vizconde nunca podrá llegar a entender del todo）; una pasión que la cantante también compartía con su difunto padre， su primer maestro。«Hay una virtud en la música que hace que no exista nada en el mundo exterior fuera de esos sonidos que invaden el corazón。 Olvidé mi extravagante aventura。 Solo revivía la voz y la seguía embriagada en su armonioso viaje。 […] Yo escuchaba… Aquella voz cantaba…»。Aunque Christine dice temer a Erik， y no querer vivir con él en su palacio subterráneo， también siente compasión por él， e incluso le guarda lealtad y confía en su palabra。 Será precisamente esa compasión la clave de la redención de Erik y de la liberación de Raoul y Christine。 Es el buen corazón y la capacidad de sacrificarse por los que ama de Christine lo que la convierte en la verdadera heroína de esta historia， pues consigue salvar tanto a Erik como al vizconde。Raoul de Chagny es un personaje que se nos intenta vender desde el principio como el héroe （aunque， al final， como ya he dicho， ese papel recaerá en Christine）。 El vizconde del libro es diferente del que vemos en el musical o en las películas; aquí es un muchachito mimado， inexperto e， incluso， algo memo， que se obsesiona con Christine casi tanto como el fantasma。Me irritaba muchísimo que ella le pidiera que no se acercara， incluso ignorándole y tratándole con desdén （para mantenerle a salvo） y el muy pesado no se diera por vencido en imponerse como el héroe。“Aun en contra de su voluntad la salvaremos” llega a decirle a Christine。También es celoso y autocompasivo， pues no le gusta que Christine sienta piedad por Erik， a pesar de su trágica historia。Al ser una novela de comienzos del siglo pasado es evidente que la damisela tiene que ser salvada por el héroe masculino （Raoul）， que es un dechado de virtudes， un caballero rico y sin defectos destacables， con el que la protagonista acaba casándose （y dejando su carrera para ser una respetable señora， obviamente）， pero es un personaje bastante plano y aburrido， sobre todo en comparación con el fantasma。 Estoy convencida de que la novela hubiera sido incluso más interesante sin la aparición de este personaje， que crea una especie de triángulo amoroso que detesto。En cuanto a Erik， es todo lo contrario a Raoul （feo y， por tanto， malvado， según la mentalidad de la época， despreciado por su propia familia y condenado a vivir bajo la ópera para escapar del mundo）。 Rechazado por sus padres desde que nació， pronto escapó de su casa y se crio con los gitanos de las ferias， de los que aprendió varios trucos de magia。 Pero lejos de unos buenos progenitores， no desarrolló unos principios morales como el resto de la sociedad， de manera que actúa pensando solo en sí mismo y en salir adelante， sin escrúpulos y sin pararse a pensar en las consecuencias de sus actos。 Pero cuando conoce a Christine， empatiza con su propia soledad y con su amor por la música y se atreve a ayudarla a perfeccionar su canto。 Poco a poco， se enamora de ella。 La llega a considerar su salvación， la oportunidad de ser por fin un hombre normal。«A mí me es imposible seguir viviendo así， en el fondo de la tierra， en un agujero， como un topo。 […]， ahora quiero vivir como todo el mundo。 Quiero tener una mujer como todo el mundo e ir con ella a pasear el domingo»。Pero el deseo de Erik en la sociedad de la época era una utopía condenada al fracaso。 Era impensable que una joven bella y talentosa pudiese acabar con un “monstruo” y no con el “héroe”。 Héroe que no duda en insultarla y en tacharla de tener “alma de cortesana” por pasearse en carruaje con otro hombre。Puede que el fantasma no fuese el interés romántico más conveniente para Christine， dado su pasado y su evidente locura en algunos momentos， pero Raoul de Chagny， aunque en 1910 podría ser el héroe ideal， desde mi punto de vista tampoco es el interés romántico idóneo。 No solo acosa a Christine， se obsesiona con salvarla y la insulta y desprecia cuando ella le ignora （por su propio bien）， sin molestarse en preguntarle qué le pasa para actuar así， sino que， al casarse con él， Christine tuvo que renunciar a su carrera como artista y a su pasión por la música。«Por su manera excitada de actuar durante la escena y de mirarme […]， había podido darme cuenta de que su pasión no tenía límites。 Para que no me tomara en sus brazos en un momento en el que no podía ofrecerle la menor resistencia， era preciso que aquel monstruo fuera a la vez un ángel y quizá， a pesar de todo， lo era un poco: el Ángel de la música， y puede que lo hubiera sido del todo si Dios le hubiera dado otro físico en lugar de vestirlo de podredumbre»。 。。。more

I don't often come across a story where I prefer the adaptation over the source material， but Phantom of the Opera is definitely one of them。Although I am happy to have read this， I probably never will again。 The fact that it took me almost two months to read a 190 page story is a great reflection of the struggle I experienced with this book。If I ever crave the story， I'll just listen to the musical or watch the 25th anniversary concert。 I don't often come across a story where I prefer the adaptation over the source material， but Phantom of the Opera is definitely one of them。Although I am happy to have read this， I probably never will again。 The fact that it took me almost two months to read a 190 page story is a great reflection of the struggle I experienced with this book。If I ever crave the story， I'll just listen to the musical or watch the 25th anniversary concert。 。。。more
